Fethiye
is fast becoming one of Turkey's most popular Mediterranean holiday
destinations for travellers from all over the world. The historical
port town of Fethiye is set in a sheltered bay with a spectacular backdrop
of mountains and pine trees. An important port since Lycian and Roman
times, the bustling town is one of Turkey's gems.
Fethiye has something to offer for everyone.
On the
sea front you will find a promenade lined with excellent restaurants
and bars. Further along there is the newly completed Ece Saray Marina
which is home to visiting yachts from around the world.
Fethiye
old town has many historical building, take a stroll around the narrow
pedestrianised streets and squares, haggle for one of the wonderful
hand made Turkish Carpets, browse one of the gold and Jewellery shops
for your holiday bargain.
Fethiye
old town also has a good selection of restaurants mainly serving Turkish
food, but there are now also two Italian restaurants one newly opened
for the summer of 2006.
Night life
in Fethiye is quiet and relaxed most people whiling away the warm night
sitting out side many of the restaurants and bars, if you want a more
lively evening try the Ottoman bar located in the old town in one of
Fethiyes oldest buildings. There is only one small disco, so if you
want to dance to the early hours then head up to Hisaronu which is around
20 minutes away by local bus (dolmus) with a fare of around 2.5 Turkish
Lira. Here you will find plenty of nightlife.
The range
of Accommodation Fethiye has on offer is good and there is something
to suit every pocket from simple accommodation offered by pensions and
hostels which are mainly located in the district of Karagozler over
looking a quiet part of the bay of Fethiye, for travellers on a tighter
budget, to luxury five star hotels such as the Ece Saray Marina hotel
which is located at Fethiyes new Marina. There is also a good selection
of family run hotels which offer good value and a warm welcome such
as the Yacht Plaza again over looking the bay, this particular hotel
has a clientele which return year after year. For a holiday with a difference
there are plenty of Gulets (traditional Turkish sailing boats) for charter
or more modern yachts from the Marina.
On your
holiday to Fethiye don't forget to take a look at some of it's historical
sites such as the impressive rock tombs carved out of the mountain side
at the back of the town, these date back to the 4th century bc, the
largest and most elaborate of these which looks like a temple is the
tomb of King Amyntas which has been dated from an inscription on one
of the pillars, this is flood lit at night and is visible from all over
the town. A few yards back from fethiyes water front is the Telemessos
Theatre Roman in origin and only excavated fairly recently. On the Fethiye
to Kaya road are the remains of the medieval castle which dates back
to the Knights of St. John.
Suggested
day trips - Try one of the daily boat trips which are bookable at the
harbour, these represent excellent value for money at around £8
to £12 including BBQ lunch, choose from blue bays, 12 islands,
Goceck Market, Oludeniz, Butterfly Valley and many more including Diving
and Fishing trips.
If you
wish to venture further inland some places well worth visiting are the
archaeological sites such Ephesus and Tlos. Natural wonders include
Pamukkale known worldwide as the cotton castle which is formed from
Calcium Oxide deposits, and Saklikent Gorge.

and the surrounding region. If you are looking for a small holiday apartment
or large detached villa with pool and sea views Fethiye is the ideal
location. Due to the excellent value Turkey has to offer many new estate
agents have sprung up in Fethiye over the past few years, most are located
on the main road that runs between Fethiye old town and the promenade
which runs around the Marina.
